Souls were degenerating but when reborn they retained the memory and made statues of their dear ones - thus started tradition of Statue Worship - about 3.5 lac years back. Later the spirits started abiding in such statues. Spirits are THOUGHT FORMS and in a place of worship the collective thought forms abide in statues or material objects, draw life force from the persons and keep them united in those very thoughts
